How to Measure Your Head for a Custom Hat
Getting the right fit is key to a hat that feels just as good as it looks. Follow these simple steps to take accurate measurements before placing your custom order
Step 1: Measure Your Head Circumference
Grab a soft measuring tape (or a string and ruler). Wrap it around your head–it should be about one finger-width above your ears and eyebrows. It should feel secure but not tight. This number is your head circumference.
Step 2: Measure Crown Height
To find your crown height, create a right angle using two straight edges, such as two rulers. Hold one vertically inside your headband area and the other horizontally across the top of your head. The distance from the bottom edge to the top of your head is your crown height.
Step 3: Determine Your Crown Shape
Rounded: Your forehead looks very round from the front, but the back of your head is flat when viewed from the side. A hat will likely have no pressure points and feel comfortable all around.
Round Oval: Your forehead is round, but slightly more drawn out, and the back of your head is just as round as the front. A hat may feel tighter on the sides.
Long Oval: Your temples have an indentation, and your forehead is more prominent. A hat will likely fit tighter front-to-back and be looser on the sides.
Extra Long Oval: Your forehead is very tall, your temples dip in, and your forehead comes out even further. Like a long oval, a hat will fit tighter front-to-back or be loose on the sides.
Tips for Best Results
- A flexible measuring tape works best—avoid rigid ones if possible.
- If you’re in between sizes, it’s usually safest to size up for comfort.
- Make sure your hair is styled as you’d normally wear it with the hat (no buns or high ponytails).
- Custom fitting is all about personal preference. Some people like a snug fit to keep their hat secure in the wind, while others prefer a looser feel for casual wear.
- Measuring with a friend can help ensure everything is level and accurate.
